Personal Ethics
Cases assigned: Select one case you want to explore from the three cases introduced by Ryan Holiday’s book (Trust Me, I’m Lying; pp.240-258). The recommended approach is as follows: 1) Identifying ethical problems in the case (15 points): Explain why and how the case is related to ISC ethics and discuss the ethical challenges or problems related to the case. Give some background or factual information to identify ISC ethics behind the case. Rather than focusing on the case description, activate your ethical sensitivity to understand the case from analytic and critical views. Discuss how it is relevant to today’s ISC and media industry, why ISC professionals (and ISC students) should care about it, how it affects others. I will evaluate how deeply you understand the case from ethical perspective. 2) Developing the ethical framework for the case (20 points): Extend the discussion to your ethical decision making process and your ethical stand. Address what role of organizations (e.g., firms, non-profit organizations, media) involved in this ethical dilemma play, what facts were collected and considered, what values were conflicted and most important under this situation, and what ethical principles were lacking or endangered. Also, discuss what alternative courses of actions are available in this situation, which course of action you would choose and why, how your choice would improve ISC ethics, and how your choice would make a difference to those in this situation. In this stage, ensure that your ethical framework takes a systematic and logical process, and your course of actions are made from the careful consideration of each element and step in the framework. Efforts to related and integrate concepts you have learned in class are required. Make references to specific aspects of our readings and other topics covered in lecture. You may also include outside resources relevant to ISC ethical standards. 3) Writing and Format (15 points): Since this is a written assignment, it is useful to organize your ideas for the purposes of coherence. That is, do not simply list your answers to the questions asked above. A logical flow is needed to integrate your ideas into the paper, including transitions as you move from one idea to another. It is important to incorporate appropriate terms and concepts as well as theoretical perspectives into your discussion. The paper will be evaluated on the depth and scope of your reflective insight on your ethics in the situation. Make sure your thoughts logically organized and clearly expressed. Avoid the common pitfalls of typos and writing errors. The paper should be double-spaced and typed, and should be approximately 5-6 pages, excluding references, in length. Write logically and clearly. Avoid the common pitfalls of typos and writing errors. Please adhere to APA guidelines (double-spaced, 1” margins, Times New Roman, size 12, reference page)
