Musical Theatre Production
In response to viewing a video-capture of a professional musical theatre production (list provided by the instructor), each student will compose a 750-word critical response to the production. The essay should be based on both your study of the musical itself, as well as your critique of viewing a performance of the musical. Using the University of Wisconsin’s guide for “How to Review a Play” and Marcia L. Ferguson’s A Short Guide to Writing About Theatre as resources and guides, construct a thoughtful piece of theatre criticism that orients the reader in the history of the musical, and then offers the reader an analysis of that musical when experienced in production. 750 words sounds like more than it is so you will need to be economical in your writing. Here are some things to consider: The opening/first paragraph of the review should transport the reader into the world of the play. In addition to critiquing the performance itself, you should discuss the history and significance of the musical. For more information on the performance run and creative team, visit the Internet Broadway Database. Please make sure you consult the above guides and resources. They give you a very good step-by-step approach to successfully tackling this assignment. Please also see the sample reviews (posted below) of Heroes of the Fourth Turning and Hello, Dolly!.
