He joshed with theaudience, settled onto a stool and readied himself for questions on the issues.”Hi, Governor Clinton,” a 20-year-old student from Long Beach State University said in a friendlyenough fashion. “How did it feel growing up in an alcoholic family and having a brother who’s a drugaddict?””If you had to do it over again,” another questioner asked, “would you inhale?”Blunt, impolite stuff.But this was MTV, the music video channel that put Mr. Clinton on aprogram titled “Choose or Lose:Facing the Future with Bill Clinton.” The broadcast, which was planned for an hour but was expandedto 90 minutes halfway through the taping, offered a twist to the new video Presidential campaign:young people.For Mr. Clinton, the program was a considerably more snazzy venue than is the norm for him, ArsenioHall’s late-night program aside.Pulsing music underscored every introduction and taped report about politics in America. And in closing segment of rapid-fire questions and answers, Mr. Clinton even managed to make a predictionfor his administration.”I think Governor Cuomo would make a good Supreme Court Justice,” he said.Mr. Clinton also shared other vital information. He said he was born under the sign of Leo, wouldcertainly appoint Hispanic people to his cabinet, has a favorite painter (El Greco), believed Prof. AnitaF. Hill and remembered “going nuts over Elvis Presley” as his first rock-and-roll experience.In a response to a question about feminist backlash, the Arkansas Governor also offered a spiriteddefense of his wife, Hillary, who has received adverse publicity for statements both she and herhusband have made about her role as a potential First Lady.”The real thing that’s frustrating for me now is that voters are now voting for women in greaternumbers than ever before,” he said. “You nominated two women for the Senate. I don’t see why mywife should check her lifetime of work and experience and intelligence and passion and compassion atthe front door just so I can get elected President.”Thomas Freston, the chairman and chief executive of MTV Networks, said that the 90-minute programwould be broadcast a half-dozen times within the next few days and that network officials expected itto attract a significant share of the audience of 15 million young people who watch MTV each week.He said the goal was to “demystify” the political process by making “the young people the king of theshow.”Mr. Clinton was questioned today by members of an audience of 200 people, most of them 18 to 24years old and many students at colleges in the Los Angeles area. Both President Bush and Ross Perothave been invited to take part, but neither has accepted so far.The number of young voters has declined in the last several national elections. The Census Bureaureported that in 1988, 40 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds cast ballots, down from 45 percent in 1984.Talking Through CommercialsThe statistics on young voters have been especially sobering for Democrats: In 1984, 59 percent ofthose under 29 years old voted for Ronald Reagan. In 1988, 62 percent of that group favored GeorgeBush.Mr. Clinton’s discussions with the MTV audience, which continued even when the taping stopped forcommercial breaks and other delays, covered a range of subjects, including deficit reduction,environmental protection and abortion rights.Denise Munro, 25, a stand-up comedian who was part of the audience and said she supported EdmundG. Brown Jr. in the California primary, said afterward that she would probably vote for Mr. Clinton,even though she found him to be a bit “slick.””Not Perot,” she said, composing a mock slogan for the likely independent candidate. “For a change,Ross Perot.
