Evidence-based practice is now implemented among nurses in order to clearly define a problem and understand it. Therefore, researches are carried out to get the best evidence, analyze it an implement the results in practice which in turn helps improve the quality of care provided by healthcare workers. The use of quantitative and qualitative research methods for infection control could help create different strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections.

Qualitative research is “the investigation of phenomena, typically in an in-depth and holistic fashion, through a collection of rich narrative materials using a flexible research design” (Polit & Beck, 2017, p.741). Quantitative research is “the investigation of phenomena that lend themselves to precise measurement and quantification, often involving a rigorous and controlled design” (Polit & Beck, 2017, p.741). Qualitative research is about introducing a humanistic and idealistic approach to understanding a particular research query (Pathak, Jena & Kalra, 2013). Quantitative research focuses on the deriving conclusion from already existing data using general quantitative methods (Mundar, Matotek, & Jakus, 2012).Infection Control Essay Assignment

The goal of the qualitative research method for infection control is to discover and understand assumptions based on the players’ themselves which in the case of the research carried out by Cohen et al., (2016) are the nurses. The goal of this research was to explore “decision-making regarding isolation-based infection and control practices in nursing homes.” This is where the advantages of qualitative research lie. Qualitative research can get the in-depth detail of the research problem because participants can expatiate on what the problem is. In this research by Cohen et al., (2016), semi-structured interviews were used with topic guides which allows the participants to give their best knowledge about the research interview questions. Another advantage of qualitative research is that it takes a more holistic approach, it takes into consideration the people involved, where they are located, the instruments they used in their practice and how it affects them in general. The researchers were able to get a broad understanding of the situation, allowing them to narrow it down to the best possible one.

Another significant advantage gained from the information provided by the researchers was that they were able to assess the message gotten from the participants during the interviews (human factor). The interviewees were able to discuss “practice decisions in the context of organism transmission risk in specific situations and among individual residents” (Cohen et al., 2016. p.633). However, there are certain disadvantages, this qualitative research could not be generalized which is a theme of many qualitative types of researches, the sample sizes are small, and the research is subjective. It was indicated as a limitation by Cohen et al. (2016) that due to the purposeful nature of the research, transferability to other areas are limited. Another disadvantage discovered was due to the nature of the interviews and the length in days, different results can be achieved on different days and with different people who were indicated as a limitation in this research by Cohen et al., stating a variation in answers of the follow-up questions asked by the interviewers.Infection Control Essay Assignment

Another approach to evidence-based practice is a quantitative research method. In infection control, one of the advantages of quantitative research as shown by Yen et al. (2009) and Rutala et al. (2017) is the use of larger samples which helps generalize the conclusions.  Furthermore, because of their use of statistical data, their analysis is considered reliable. Rutala et al. (2017) used a small sample size, but they were still able to conduct a large clinical trial that demonstrated the significant relationship between microbial load and healthcare-associated infections.  The use of various numbers to back up their research makes a quantitative research method more reliable especially in situations that need systematic and standardized comparisons like the healthcare system. With the advantages comes its limitations, as I gathered from the information provided, quantitative research requires a lot of input (Materials and Methods) in order to get the desired result. Yen et al. (2009) needed forty-eight hospitals that implemented infection care measures which also requires 99 factors that needed to be considered to determine if the right infection care measures were implemented. Furthermore, the research is carried out on inanimate objects and cannot explain the human experience or perception. Rutala et al. (2017) studied microbial samples for their research.

Qualitative research might not be seen as real science because many argue that it lacks scientific qualities of objectivity, reliability, and accuracy. Howitt & Cramer (2011) claimed that qualitative research could not be considered entirely as a crucial part of psychological research and theory, but it still possesses scientific qualities. The known methods of qualitative research are open-ended questions, interviews, vignettes (case studies), and observations. Although these might be seen as less scientific, they provide in-depth descriptions and explanations. Qualitative research does not necessarily involve a hypothesis; it is carried out to shed light on a research problem. So regardless of which data was collected, this research would still provide the result needed to improve the quality of care provided by health practitioners. So in this regard, the strength of the research should be considered rather than the amount of data collected which is why I can believe qualitative research to be scientific. Furthermore, I believe the difference between qualitative and quantitative research is numbers. Quantitative research describes data based on numbers while qualitative research describes data based on observation.Infection Control Essay Assignment
