Hypothetical Research Proposal
This is a hypothetical research proposal. It should be creative and viewed through the lens of having unlimited resources. This is the format: 1. Question: Do protests create nations? 2. Hypothesis: As protests increase, and the government ignores the people’s demands for reform, then the people will develop nationalist ideals. 3. Design/Methods – how would you answer the question? + Ethnographic Research + Field research: Interviewing/Survey + Process Tracing + Newspaper Articles (World News Paper Archive) 4. Scope/Application – Justify the selection of these cases/approach 5. Literature Review – Should NOT prove or disprove the argument I am basing this proposal off of the relationship between the governments of Hong Kong and Mainland China (Beijing) Here’s some historical context: In the early 1800s, China attempted to stop the British from smuggling drugs into the country, which resulted in the First Opium War. After the British’s victory, the Treaty of Nanjing forced China to cede Hong Kong to the British indefinitely. The island prospered and developed into an East-West trading center and major commercial gateway for southern China. Over the years the two have constructed distinctly different government systems: China’s political policy is authoritarian politics where the communist government has ultimate control over the majority of society, while UK political policy is democratic and the government does not have ultimate control. However, in 1997, the British agreed to relinquish control of Hong Kong under the condition that they would respect the “one country, two systems” relationship lasting until at least 2047, and pledge to preserve Hong Kong’s capitalist system; which is referred to as the Basic Law. Nevertheless, since the handover, accusations of Beijing’s encroaching on Hong Kong citizens’ civil liberties began to surface. In 2014, a series of protests emerged, The Umbrella Movement, for universal suffrage and fairer elections for the city’s chief executive promised in the Basic Law. In 2016, booksellers in Hong Kong were “disappearing” and were later shown to be in the custody of the police. And, in 2019, the Chinese government proposed a bill that would force Hong Kong residents into extradition to mainland China, which has much more severe conditions. Since these events, the United Kingdom has withdrawn its extradition treaty with Hong Kong and China has threatened to “strike back” if the UK gets in their way; but, recently Britain decided to discontinue its relationship with Huawei 5G Networks, a Chinese tech giant, due to the growing anger of British and Hong Kong citizens. And, I think that this relationship will continue to sour if the Chinese government refuses to compromise. ^I wrote this so feel free to copy and paste anywhere that you see fit Lastly, draw comparisons from the protests in Hong Kong to the protest/unrest in Macau, China. ONLY USE THE PROVIDED SOURCES.
