Global Media
The question for the research paper is: Has the globalisation of journalism allowed it to become increasingly ‘free’ from external constraints like governmental controls and corporate or commercial pressures? Or is journalism, based on the principle of freedom of expression, on a global scale increasingly under threat? The guidelines state that an example of media is absolutely necessary to discuss the theoretical approaches towards the question to make conclusions and answer the questions. One such example could be global investigative journalism. When discussing the features of good research papers, the prof said: “they all identify, define and discuss the concepts first… they all usually have a singular example that they use the concepts to bring out the pertinent issues of … then they draw conclusions from that.” I have said that 10 sources are necessary, but I would expect that 3-5 key theoretical sources were used to lay the groundwork of the paper, and the rest were more supplementary in nature. Hitting the 10 mark is not vital. Here are the guidelines for the assessment: Identify a relevant example of media which allows you to explore the issues or concepts implicated by the question. Research the existing academic literature on your topic, concepts and example. Offer a response to the question that critically analyzes the trends and issues involved with your topic. I am also happy to include the powerpoint presentation for the week of content that pertains to this particular question, but the file is too large, so I will need to send it via other means. The readings referenced in this weeks lecture could be used as a starting point for the essay, they are: Hanska, M.
