During most academic years, at least one fraternity pledge dies in the United States as a result of alcohol abuse. About 4,000 people in the United States die annually from alcohol poisoning, and many of them are college students. Why might fraternity pledges be more prone than other people to consume large enough quantities of alcohol to literally poison themselves? What part does peer pressure play in alcohol and other kinds of substance abuse?
What are some of the most frequently abused drugs in the United States? Who is most likely to use these drugs? Do race, class, gender, and age play a part in drug abuse?

Drugs are used either for therapeutic or recreational purposes and may be legal, illegal, or undesignated. Drug addiction has two essential characteristics, which are increased tolerance and withdrawal. In the United States, use of alcoholic beverages is considered an accepted part of the dominant culture. Abuse of alcohol may cause health problems, accidents, and family problems. Many Americans smoke, and people who do not smoke may be harmed by environmental tobacco smoke. Prescription drugs benefit millions of people, but some become dependent. Over-the-counter drugs are subject to abuse and can be dangerous if not taken as directed. Many also use illegal drugs including marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines (“uppers”), depressants, narcotics such as heroin, and hallucinogens. Sociologists using an interactionist framework believe that drug behavior is a learned behavior. Those who follow the functionalist perspective believe that increased drug abuse results when social institutions no longer keep deviant behavior in check. From a conflict perspective, people in privileged positions criminalize the drugs that are abused by the poor and powerless. All sociologists acknowledge the biological connections to, and implications of, biological/physiological addiction regardless of processes of learning, structural/functional imbalances, or economic and power issues that may be a part of the processes leading to drug addiction
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument
