Student Name: JACINTA ASIEGBUNAM DNP Project Title: Using evidence-based practice in minimizing the risks of nurses’ exposure to infectious diseases in an outpatient setting DNP Project Description: (Include responses to the questions in the assignment guidelines) The Issue to Resolve In contemporary practice, infectious diseases show a significant increase in prevalence and incidence in humans, and the issues are projected to continue in the future. Nurses as the critical frontline practitioners in care setting, they are at an upper risk of contracting various infections and are encompassed with an obligation to fight these contagions in the healthcare system (Lam, Kwong, Hung, & Chien, 2020). Therefore, nurses are the sole preventionists by identifying susceptible cases and confirming patients with EIDs through an extensive assessment. However, nurses’ involvement in responding to IEDs is mainly reported with inconsistency, and their performance can be seriously hindered, especially during outbreaks or epidemics. The study also reveals that the nurses’ compliance with the protective or precautionary procedures is initially related to the individual’s anticipation of the risk level of contracting an infectious disease (Lam, Kwong, Hung, & Chien, 2020). Therefore, nurses are highly susceptible or vulnerable to contagious diseases, requiring a need to establish stable measures for resolving the knowledge gap, which increases the risks. How the Project Resolves the Problem This project seeks to resolve the problem by suggesting evidence-based practices to establish potential solutions to the challenge of nurses’ vulnerability to exposure to infectious diseases in the outpatient setting. The project must seek to align its proposals with the Ki, Han, Son, & Park (2019) assertions that reducing the risk of exposure requires an establishment of routine infection-prevention plans. Besides, this project will resolve the problem by proposing training programs and adopting lifelong learning strategies for improvement. Herzig et al. 6/2019 (2016) confirm that adequate training is an essential area for improvement to establish sufficient evidence-based practices to minimize the risks of infections at the nursing homes. Similarly, the project will assign actions such as triage provision, proper use of PPEs, educating health care personnel to use and dispose of PPE, supply adequate PPE, and ensuring cooperation between lead nursing and information departments. Synopsis of Three Sources of Evidence from Literature Herzig, C. T., Stone, P. W., Castle, N., Pogorzelska-Maziarz, M., Larson, E. L., & Dick, A. W. (2016). Infection prevention and control programs in US nursing homes: Results of a national survey. Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, 17(1), 85-88. doi:10.1016/j.jamda.2015.10.017 The authors of this article conducted a cross-sectional survey evaluating the current perspectives regarding nursing home infection prevention and control (IPC) plans. The study also assesses the distinctions in IPC program features for those that received infection control deficiency citation. The surveys attained a 39% response rate, with 990 NHS completing and returning the responses. The research confirmed that nursing homes with less trained and less experienced professionals, including those that offered inadequate financial resources for educational support on infection control, received citations showing the incidence of infections in the facilities. At least 36% of the participating facilities had received deficiency citations. The article concludes that lack of sufficient training on infection prevention and control is essential for enhancement. Besides, there is a need for evidence-based practices to minimize infection risk in nursing homes. Ki, H. K., Han, S. K., Son, J. S., & Park, S. O. (2019). Risk of transmission via medical employees and importance of routine infection-prevention policy in a nosocomial outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS): A descriptive analysis from a tertiary care hospital in South Korea. BMC Pulmonary Medicine, 19(1). doi:10.1186/s12890-019-0940-5 Ki and colleagues conducted a descriptive research for a hospital in South Korea using a cohort case study. The researchers sought to assess MERS routes for transmission the organization’s routine infection-prevention plans capability to manage the pandemic or an outbreak. This research was an examination of both emergency department (ED) and general wards (GW) participants. The study on transmission risk was conducted on 228 6/2019 participants in the ED and 218 members in the GW. The researchers found that the ED had a greater proportion of high-risk participants compared to the rate in the general wards, i.e., 14.5% versus 2.8%, but the latter indicated a higher attack rate of 16.7%. The study ascertains patients contracted MERS indirectly by the caregivers at the point of care. The research concludes that routine policies for infection prevention can successfully minimize the transmission of infections such as MERS. Kang, J., O’Donnell, J. M., Colaianne, B., Bircher, N., Ren, D., & Smith, K. J. (2017). Use of personal protective equipment among health care personnel: Results of clinical observations and simulations. American Journal of Infection Control, 45(1), 17-23. doi:10.1016/j.ajic.2016.08.011 The authors acknowledge that little is known regarding health care personnel (HCP) proficiency in using PPE. A study sample of 50 HCP using the clinical PPE practice was videotaped in two simulation sessions. Throughout the study, 82 HCP were acquired for the study, and 12 of the HCP were acquired among the simulation sample population. The results suggested that out of 130 simulation sessions of 65-sample size, the contamination rate was 79.2% with various PPE sets. A simple set PPE exhibited a 92.3% contamination rate, and 66.2% was recorded for the full body set PPE. Through the survey DN 803 DNP Project Data Management Essay
