Developing a Perioperative Glucose Management Project
Developing a Perioperative Glucose Management Project
DNP Project Proposal Paper Topic: Perioperative glycemic control on diabetic patients. My goal is to implement a protocol for healthcare providers such as pre-op/recovery nurses, and certified registered nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist can have an easily accessible document when taking care of a diabetic patient whose blood sugar level is either too low (hypoglycemia), or too high (hyperglycemia). This protocol will show them how to treat hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia in diabetic patients undergoing surgery. The main issue in practice right now is that there is no standardized form of handling this and every provider treats these however they want. Example: A patient might come in for surgery with a high blood sugar and one provider might decide to give the patient 3 units of insulin to lower the blood sugar while another provider would give 5 units to the same patient. This will assure that all diabetic patients will receive equal glycemic treatment thereby reducing the amount of perioperative complications and decrease the incidence of morbidity and mortality of the diabetic population while undergoing any surgical procedures. SECTION 1 (DUE 09/11) Introduction to proposal/ Identify a practice problem (evidence-based) – This section should first include an introduction to the practice problem/ issue and proposed project. Start broadly with a poignant statistic and then hone in on the problem. The problem must be significant to the degree that changes in practice would have a high probability of adoption. Provide background information and identify why this problem is significant. Be sure to incorporate the specifics as they relate to your individual project proposal. Must be in APA format and include reference listing. (~ 4 paragraphs) SECTION 2 (DUE 10/02) Background/Review of Evidence: This section should include identification and evaluation of relevant research related to your projectSynthesize the findings from research related to the specific practice problem. Indicate what is known (what studies have shown) in your topic area. Describe the most relevant studies that demonstrate effectiveness of what you are proposing to translate forward into practice with your project. Must be in APA format, (7th ed.) and include references.
(~ 5 paragraphs) Project Goal/Objectives: The goal should be overarching. The objectives should be numbered and stated in feasible & measurable terms (SMART objectives). (~ 1 paragraph) SECTION 3 (DUE 10/22) Project Methods- (~ 4-6 paragraphs) Detailed discussion of the plan for conducting the project. Must be in APA format and include reference listing. • Design: Indicate the design you plan to use (it could be preposttest design, posttest only) and the translational framework that will guide your project. • Project Plan (a step by step plan of what the project will entail. Write in a way that the project could be replicated.) 1. Inputs: The resources that go into a program (including community partners, budget, personnel, other resources….) 2. Outputs: The activities the program undertakes 3. Timeline: (consider use of a figure/chart) • Measures: Write about how you intend to evaluate each objective. Make sure measures align with the objectives. If you are using a survey, state the reliability (with Cronbach’s alpha) and validity of the instrument. Attach a copy of the instrument. (Make sure you obtain permission to use the instrument, if needed, and state this in the proposal). • Data Analysis/ Evaluation Plan 1. Data Analysis Plan: Write a paragraph about what statistical software program and statistical tests will be employed to examine for change (if applicable). 2. Outcomes: The changes or benefits that you expect. This should include specific program outputs, demographic information, and program evaluation components such as anticipated health outcomes expected as a result of the program. Be sure that each expected outcome reported aligns with the project objectives. 3. Plan for Sustainability (~ 1-2 paragraphs) Note how your project involves a sustainable practice change that will be sustained even when you leave. Describe how the system, policy or process is modified to facilitate the adoption of the practice improvement initiative. Contingency Plan ( 1-2 paragraphs) Describe your plan A, B, C (backup plan) in case your initial plan is not feasible Impact on Practice and Policy (1-2 paragraphs) Potential impact on practice and potential policy implications Summary/Conclusion (1 paragraph) References in APA Format (see Purdue Owl website for APA sample paper examples, no abbreviating journal titles) Required documents in either body of proposal or as appendices (Following APA format) – Budget – Timeline
