Your podcast should show a consideration of your specific audience, including an appropriate call to action relevant to your argument.Synthesis & TransformationYour podcast should reference at least four sources while you speak, including:Three sources in the podcast must be sources used in your research paper.Two sources in the podcast must be scholarly. I recommend thinking about scholarly sources as articles published in academic journals.Remember that synthesis is always in the service of creating something new. While you will draw on source material and main points/arguments developed in your research paper, you’ll need to redesign this information’s presentation in this new text. In your podcast you should not simply read large sections of your research paper verbatim. Rather, the purpose of this project is to consider how to reshape your paper’s argument in this new genre, aimed at a new audience. Also keep in mind that attempting to receive credit for the same work more than once is considered plagiarism in academic contexts, which is another reason why the majority of your podcast’s language and presentation should differ from the research paper’s.Podcast DynamicsOne key element of a podcast that separates it from similar genres (like oral speeches) is that because podcasts are a digital text, they can entertain the listener using dynamics: you can add in music, sound effects, audio clips, and other aural cues. Since many podcasts are based on conversations and interviews, you are also welcome to include another person or persons in your podcast. This is not a requirement, but rather an option, if you choose to take it.odcast GenreLike all our projects in first-year English, your podcast should show an understanding of the conventions of this particular genre. We’ll discuss these conventions/features in class, but keep in mind that podcasts often feel conversational and personal, maintaining a relaxed and friendly tone. Most simply, it shouldn’t feel like you’re simply reading from a script but interacting with your audience on a person-to-person level. However, while colloquial, podcast’s main goal is often to provide some new insight or argument the expands the listener’s worldview. We’ll discuss this balance between the conversational and persuasive more in class, but just know that your podcast should show a careful study of this particular genre and its conventions.Podcast Audience & Call to ActionAs you develop your podcast script, you should consider your specific audience. You should envision that your podcast would be enjoyed by your peers—that is, other UIS students. You are expected to utilize rhetorical techniques like ethical, logical, and emotional appeals to effectively speak to your audience. What kinds of things—music, anecdotes, interviews, conversations, and more, will help make your topic interesting and relevant to an audience of college students? You should also consider what sort of actions UIS students have the ability and power to take that have an impact on your issue and include an appropriate call to action for this audience—what do you want your audience to do with the information you have given them?In SumIn sum, persuading your audience of your research paper’s argumentative stance and orally incorporating some of your research paper’s source material is the goal of the podcast, but how you achieve that goal is entirely up to you.However, do keep in mind your genre and audience: the goal of the podcast is to both entertain UIS students, as well as persuade them of your argumentative position. Another key feature of this podcast is that it should be dynamic. It shouldn’t solely be one voice reading from a script for 7 minutes; rather, it should make use of the engaging features, conventions, and expectations of a podcast (the genre).Reflective EssayIn addition to your podcast, you’ll compose a 700-850 word reflective essay exploring the rhetorical decisions you made when constructing your podcast, along with an MLA-formatted Works Cited page for any and all sources used in Project 4. A full prompt and guidelines for this second component of Project 4 will be provided in Week 15Remote ResourcesKeep in mind that you have three major resources to help you with crafting and revising your Project 4 podcast and reflective essay: 1.) ITS – ITS can offer remote assistance with using recording software to complete your podcast, 2.) Prof. Whalen – while questions involving technology should be directed at ITS, I’m a great resource for assistance regarding the content of your podcast and help with the reflective essay, and 3.) The Learning Hub – the Hub is a great resource for help with both components of our project.Accessibility NoteSince multimodality draws on different modes and often uses digital technology, this results in some genres being more or less accessible to different individuals. If you feel that creating a podcast is inaccessible to you, reach out to Prof. Whalen to address these issues and/or discuss an alternative assignment. Note that accessibility is about access, as opposed to knowledge or skill. Not knowing how to use the software/equipment to record a podcast is much different than feeling as if you don’t have access to it. Luckily, great, free recording software is available to us and the devices many of us already have access to (like our computers or phones) can be used to create audio files.his project shoulddemonstrate the following skills & abilities:Delivery and content demonstrate proficiency in and awareness of assignment’s rhetorical situation including its purpose, genre, and medium.Podcast addresses the expectations, values, and beliefs of the specified audience with regards to content, tone, and design, emphasizing the dynamic features of the medium.Podcast is built around a central narrow claim. Podcast is a clearly persuasive and argumentative text.Project supports all claims, ideas, and analyses with clear evidence and fully-developed reasoning.Source material is skillfully chosen, smoothly integrated, and accurately cited to effectively persuade the audience.Reflective essay shows active and thorough reflection by the writer regarding the rhetorical choices made when constructing their podcast, as well as the writer’s growth throughout the semester.Project components shows clear and thoughtful organization, showcasing connections between ideas, making it easy to transition between them.This project should demonstrate the following processes & conventions:An understanding of the importance of proofreading and editing.
