A Social Theory

Write a paper, maximum of 2 pages (typed and double spaced), using the followinginstructions:Define what a social theory is and explain why we use theory in sociological research.Select one of the following areas of social theory (Conflict Theory, Structural Functionalism, Symbolic Interaction) and summarize the central points of theories within these areas. Bold what theory you are using.Choose one of the following topics (culture; social interaction; groups, networks, and organizations; deviance; stratification, class, and inequality; or global inequality). If you so desire, you may discuss gender or racial inequality. However, you cannot discuss socialization. Identify an issue or trend in this topic area. Identify in bold what your area and specific topic is.Provide an analysis demonstrating how the theoretical perspective can be applied to explain the sociological phenomenon you chose to discuss. Your analysis should include making a main point and supporting it with evidence.For example, I might select conflict theory as my theoretical area, gender inequality as the topic, and the rising cesarean rate as the issue. I could explain that theories of conflict can be applied to the issue of women’s reproductive care in the United States because it holds that social order in society is influenced by power and coercion. According to the textbook, power is a concept that is understood as “the ability of individuals or groups to make their own interests count, even when others resist” (Giddens et. al. 2018:21). This concept can be applied to OBGYN’s, as they have power to make decisions about women’s mode of delivery, regardless of what women want. Therefore, conflict theory explains how women are coerced into having undesired cesarean deliveries because it helps explain social order in society; that doctors have greater power than patients. In this example, because OBGYN’s have greater power, they decide what the best mode of delivery is for women, and not the patient. Therefore, this is one way we see how conflict theory explains why the percentage of undesired cesarean deliveries is increasing in the United States.Provide proper grammar, spelling, and citations.
